Description
Surface of the sun. In this high resolution image from the Inouye Solar Telescope, solar features as small as 30km (18 miles) in size can be seen. The image reveals a turbulent pattern of cell-like structures, each about the size of Texas. Hot solar material (plasma) rises in the bright centers of these cells, cools off and then sinks below the surface in dark lanes in a process known as convection.
