Description
Cross-section of the stained wood of a white oak tree (Quercus alba), photographed at 150X magnification through a light microscope using Rheinburg illumination. The large ovals seen here, cells called vessel elements, are stacked end-to-end to form micropipes for moving fluids up the tree.
