Description
Light micrograph of a wilted iris petal. In the cells of a fresh petal the cytoplasm (stained purple) fills each of the cells. But as the petal begins to wilt, water is lost and the cytoplasm retracts away from the cell wall into the center of each cell. Photo number bd3598 shows a fresh petal from the same flower. The many tiny particles visible within the cytoplasm are organelles known as plastids which contain the petal's pigment. Magnification is x150 at 35mm.
