Description
This geared-truck engine, patented by M. W. Baldwin in 1840 and built in 1841, was designed to increase adhesion. ON a trial trip from Reading to Philadelphia, it hauled 590 tons in 5 hours and 22 minutes. This feat received much publicity. The locomotive was later sold to the Sugar Loaf Coal Company. Although the engine performed satisfactory service, it was the only one of its kind ever built.
