Print entitled "Jacques Cartier, his first interview with the Indians at Hochelaga, now Montreal, in 1535." Jacques Cartier (1491-1557) was a French explorer who claimed Canada for France. He was the first European to describe and map the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the shores of the Saint Lawrence River, which he named "The Country of Canadas," after the First Nations term for settlement.
