Description
The R/P FLIP (Floating Instrument Platform) is an open ocean research vessel, measuring 355 feet in length and designed to partially flood until it is at a 90-degree angle to the water. The purpose is to create a stable platform that is not buffeted by waves, allowing researchers to study wave height and collect other data. To return to horizontal, compressed air is pumped into the ballast tanks. The vessel is usually positioned off the west coast of the United States, operating out of the Scripps Nimitz Marine Facility in San Diego, California.
