Description
The Mount Washington Cog Railway is the first and oldest cog or 'rack' railway in the world. Conceived in the 1850s by Sylvester Marsh, construction started in 1866, and was completed to the summit of Mount Washington, New Hampshire (6288') in 1869. The 2.8 miles of track are built entirely on a wooden trestle, with an average grade of 25 percent (the steepest being 37.4 percent). With their tilted boilers and towed tenders, the cog engines are unique pieces of equipment, still running on coal as they did when originally built.
