Description
First airborne test of the X-38, a prototype emergency spacecraft "lifeboat" design for the International Space Station (ISS). This X-38, mainly made of fiber glass, was carried by a B-52 bomber to an 8.1 km altitude on July 30th, 1997. Once developed, X-38's would have been launched on a space shuttle and remained docked to the ISS until needed. On its return to Earth, the X-38 would glide unpowered through the atmosphere, using its fuselage to generate lift, before deploying a steerable parafoil parachute just before landing. Its development was cancelled in 2002 due to budget cuts.
