Description
1906 San Francisco earthquake. Ruins in the city of San Francisco, California, USA, following the devastating earthquake of 18 April 1906. This view shows Goat Island (in the bay, center left), Grace Church (bell tower, center) and the Ferry Building (tower behind church, center right). Grace Church was rebuilt from 1928. The Ferry Building remains one of the main landmarks in San Francisco. The city lies on the San Andreas fault, one of the world's major seismic fault lines. Much of the city was destroyed in a large series of fires that were caused by the earthquake and burned for three days before they were brought under control.
