Description
Cyanobacteria algae forms a swirling pattern at mouth of Port Mayaca Lock at Lake Okeechobee, Florida. This blue-green algae forms when agricultural runoff is deposited in the lake after heavy spring rains. Opening of the lock is necessary to maintain the 13-14 ft optimum depth. Cyanobacteria fossil records date back 3.5 billion years. This algae was formed by the record 2018 rains that mixed with the phosphorus and other fertilizers resulting in uncontrolled growth of cyanobacteria.
