Description
Full image close-up view of cyanobacteria, blue-green algae, showing the many different patterns and varied colors that this agae can produce. Cyanobacteria is one of the oldest living organisms on earth and dates back 3.5 billion years. Exposure to this toxic algae can sicken humans, kill pets and aquatic life. It is known to form tumors in humans and is a suspected factor in liver cancer in humans. This bloom covers more than 90% of Lake Okeechobee, a 730 square mile lake in central Florida. As the water remains still, patterns like this grow to large sizes. It is caused by heavy rains and the mixing of phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizers that collect in the Lake and surrounding runoff areas.
