Description
A sheet of cyanobacteria or blue-green algae; covering a portion of Lake Okeechobee with its green slime-like growth. Cyanobacteria is one of earth’s oldest living organisms at 3.5 billion years old. Exposure to this bacteria can sicken humans, pets and aquatic life. Cyanbacteria can also cause gastrointestional problems, is known to cause tumors and is associated with liver cancer. Currently, 90% of Lake Okeechobee is covered with with bacteria. It was caused by heavy spring rains and the mixing of phosphorus and nitrogen from fertilizers.
