Cyanobacteria or blue-green algae, showing a variety of colors as it grows at the Port Mayaca Locks on Lake Okeechobee, Florida. This example clearly shows the beginning of blue growth throughout the algal/bacterial bloom. The blue areas are clearly defined and have developed rapidly over a 24 hour period. The toxic algae also appears to be getting more dense as it completely covers a wide area of water backed up against the Port Mayaca Locks. The bloom continues to grow unabated due to unusually warm weather and still water. This growth is causing great concern for peoples' health living in this area.
