Description
Early formation of a cyanobacteria bloom forming along the shallow banks of a canal leading to the St. Lucie River, Fl, which connects to Lake Okeechibee. Cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, flourishes when in the nitrogen- and phosphorus-rich fertilizer runoff polluting the river. Water releases from Lake Okeechobee become necessary when heavy rains bring the Lake above and acceptable safe level. High temperatures and heavy rains this year produced record rainfall in May 2018 which is continuing into June. Water is released through several locks that surround the Lake, resulting in the growth and distribution of the toxic microorganisms, one of the oldest organisms on earth dating back 3.5 billion years.
