Description
False-colour satellite images of the Atlantic Ocean in winter and in spring, showing the seasonal changes in phytoplankton distribution. The colours represent varying phytoplankton densities from red (most dense) through yellow, green and blue to violet (least dense). Land areas are coloured grey and regions where no measurements were possible are coloured black. The increase in sunlight during the spring causes a phytoplankton bloom which covers the entire North Atlantic. The image was produced from data acquired by the Coastal Zone Colour Scanner on NASA's Nimbus-7 research satellite.
