Description
Blue-green algae or cyanobacteria forming on Lake Okeechobee in summer, 2018. Heavy spring rains rich with nitrogen and phosphorus runoff, as well as water releases to maintain acceptable water levels have resulted in growth of this potentially toxic organism. In 2016 cyanobacteria blooms resulted in large fish kills and crop damage. Cyanobacteria are one of the oldest organisms on earth, with fossil records dating back 3.5 billion years.
